Holiday fire safety tips to remember

Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services released their holiday fire safety tips on December 2. Sadly, we often hear of fires happening over Christmas; these fires can be prevented by following their safety tips.

Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services publish fire safety tips all year long. Brochure printers have helped them to design several 3-fold Brochures on topics such as “Ten tips for fire safety,” “Fire safety in the kitchen” and “Outdoor fires.” These Brochures are heavily illustrated and easy to read.

The main holiday fire safety tips have to do with real Christmas trees. It is suggested that you buy the freshest tree you can find; one that is bright green in colour and has a strong fragrance. Make sure that very few needles fall off when you shake the tree and test the flexibility of the needles that remain; the needles should bend but not break. The tree should be immersed in 2-3 litres of water to keep the stump moist and the resin sticky. The stump should be cut at an angle to facilitate better water absorption. The water should be topped off daily. The Christmas tree should also not block off any fire exits and should be kept away from fires and other heat sources such as the television.

Outdoor lights should only be used outdoors, they are too hot for indoors. Make sure you unplug all lights when you are leaving the house or going to bed. Check to make sure that none of the extension chords and lights are damaged and do not overload wall outlets. Candles should never be left unattended and extension chords should not be under carpeting or furniture.

If you follow all these tips your Christmas should be very merry indeed.
