Federal aid coming for Saskatoon charities

Saskatoon will be getting help through the Government Homelessness Partnering Strategy program, according to the Saskatoon Housing Initiatives Partnership and the Community Advisory Board on Saskatoon Homelessness.

The $464,734 in funding will be allocated to aid The Lighthouse Supported Living Inc. and Saskatoon’s Indian and Métis Friendship Centre.

The executive director of the latter facility, Bill Mintram, commented:

“There are so many people who have to make that decision of, ‘Do I have a house or do I have food’, ‘Do I provide for my kids or do I pay rent?’ When you’re on a fixed budget that doesn’t allow you to pay for those essentials, you have a lot of very hard choices.”

The monies issued to the Friendship Centre will assist in hiring three new housing coordinators to advocate for people looking for housing in the city. The centre sees approximately 15 people a day seeking a place to call home.

The Lighthouse Supported Living Inc. will be using a part of its funding for helping clients seek housing as well. It will use the rest of the monies to remodel the program’s laundry facilities and purchase a bed bug trailer.

The trailer will have the ability to travel to homes with bed bug infestations, helping occupants deal with the issue. It is an opportunity be proactive as a community, according DeeAnn Mercier, communications director of the Lighthouse program.

To promote awareness of programs that can help individuals and families locate proper housing, Print companies can aid with poster printing for materials that can be distributed around town.
