Campaign encourages non-transit riders to take the bus

Saskatoon’s 10-day transit challenge, which hoped to get more locals using public transport services, is ending today.

As part of the move, veteran transit riders paired up with people who drive their vehicles, as a way to encourage residents to use the city’s bus services.

Cameron McMillan, who is a member of Bus Riders of Saskatoon, said: ahead of the campaign:

"It’s really just a matter of getting people to try it, taking the first step to break out of habits. We just want people to give it a try and see that it can work for them.”

Currently there are more vehicles then people in Saskatoon, according to SGI.

Future plans for the city hope to create a bus rapid transit (BRT) system, which would have buses arriving along major strips every five minutes. Routes include 22nd Street, College Drive and Eighth Street.

Print companies can help to improve publicity, as they offer flyer printing and other services that can inform the community of such challenges taking place.

Saskatoon’s population is expected to double to 500,000 over the next few decades, and analysts hope that having the BRT in place would significantly cut down on the effects of rush-hour traffic.
