Woodstock transit terminal opens soon

It’s taken six years but Woodstock’s new transit terminal, located in the former Swiss Chalet building at 623 Dundas, is scheduled to open February 19.

Six buses can be accommodated in new bus bays with space for another two to be added if necessary. It will house a small office and washroom facilities for drivers; a much needed and long overdue addition to the area.

The need for a new terminal was identified in 2007. Having a terminal in this location solves the safety issue of buses parked on both sides of Welling Street and Dundas Street. Formerly, passengers transferring to different routes had to cross the busy roads. This terminal completion will take buses away from the thoroughfares.

The new terminal will provide shelter to passengers waiting for their connections with bus route maps displayed on the walls. Transit companies are an excellent prospect for Print companies, as they frequently require poster printing for terminals such as this. Materials are also often needed for the interiors of buses, shuttles and trains. Printing of schedules and transfers are also required on a regular basis.

When buses leave the terminal, the operators will activate a sensor which will change the traffic lights to green to help keep on schedule and to depart the terminal safely. There are no curbs within the terminal and bay areas, making transfers from bus to bus easier for transit customers with disabilities.

Some routes will change slightly after the new terminal opens on Feb 19. Transit riders in the City of Woodstock should check the city website for updates.
