As part of the ongoing Oxford Reads program, acclaimed Indigenous Canadian author Waubgeshig Rice will visit Woodstock, Ontario to discuss his novel Moon of the Crusted Snow and other topics.
The event will take the form of a conversation between Rice and CBC radio host Chris dela Torre. It will be followed by a meet-and-greet and book signing. The appearance is in conjunction with Oxford Reads, a program in which libraries throughout Oxford County encourage residents to read and discuss a single book. Inspired by programs in other cities and counties, the goal is to encourage the social dimension of reading, and get the whole area literally on the same page. This usually includes literary events, often advertised online and through poster printing and flyer printing.
Hailing from the Wasauksing First Nation near Parry Sound, Waubgeshig Rice first rose to prominence through a series of articles on his experience living in Germany. He has since become well-known as a fiction writer, journalist, and radio host. He is known for integrating Indigenous concerns with digital storytelling and genre narratives, as in Moon of the Crusted Snow, which tells the story of an Ashinaabe community trying to survive a post-apocalyptic winter. His first book, the short story collection Midnight Sweatlodge, won the Independent Publishers Book Award in 2012.
The Rice talk will take place at Theatre Woodstock on the evening of November 9.
