Woodstock to undertake transit study

As with many cities its size, Woodstock offers its residents access to a public transportation system. The city council recently announced that it will be looking into how well it meets the needs of the people it serves.

The council approved $39,000 in funding to perform a study into how well the transit system’s routes and hours fit into the daily schedule of its ridership. It’s likely that a consultant will be hired to undertake the project.

It was noted that there are a couple of routes that struggle to meet their 30 minute schedule during heavy traffic, which results in people missing their transfers and having to wait for the next bus.

The study will also look into the demand and feasibility of increasing the Saturday schedule, and extending service to Sundays. It will investigate the possibility changing the hours of operation for the transit system.

It was noted that there were 300,000 fares last year, and the city earned $860,000 in revenue from its fleet of buses. Unfortunately, it spent $1.3 million to keep the system running.

One way that a transit system can increase its revenue steam is through the use of printed advertising space, both on the inside and outside of its vehicles. Print companies can produce eye-catching promotions to be used in these spaces.

Public input will also be sought during the consultation process, although it hasn’t been decided yet what form this will take.
