Woodstock to hold festive event with new virtual component

One of Woodstock’s premier holiday attractions has returned, this time with a new digital extension to allow for remote viewing.

The Tour of Lights features local residents lighting up their homes and yards to create a festive spectacle. This year, the city has filmed a virtual video tour that will air on Rogers TV on December 16, and it will also be posted on the City of Woodstock’s YouTube channel.

The city has also issued a map highlighting routes for drivers to catch the best displays. The map, compiled by city engineer Lisa Tang, features a northern and southern route, as well as a city-wide path.

Holiday light displays are popular activities at houses across Ontario, from simple strings of lights to elaborate front lawns that can incorporate inflated figures, animatronics and festive banner printing. City-wide official events like the Tour of Lights evolved out of informal neighbourhood competitions, and they can offer quite a treat to passersby.

The announcement of the virtual tour paid tribute to those who hang lights:

“Thanks to those that put the ‘Merry’ in Christmas and took the time to decorate and make our community even more beautiful!”

The Woodstock Tour of Lights will run until January 8. The official maps are available from City Hall’s Reeve Street entrance or online.
