The Oxford County Council has approved a plan to construct a new four-storey apartment building in Woodstock offering affordable housing for seniors.
The medium-density development will consist of 98 units, of which 56 will be offered at affordable below-market rates to seniors with an income of less than $38,000 per year. Housing agencies typically use tools like brochure printing to make people aware of the possibilities of affordable housing.
Provincial funding allowed for an expansion from the original plan, for which financing was approved last year, for 72 units. This makes it the largest affordable housing project in Woodstock in a decade.
The county’s approval, which required changes to the area’s zoning, follows a similar vote by Woodstock City Council last November. The facility is situated on land that was formerly leased to Hydro One. The Oxford County Council deemed this land surplus last year as part of an ongoing effort to free up unused land, with the council placing particular emphasis on areas that could be used for affordable housing. The one-hectare site where the apartment buildings will be constructed was deemed the most eligible site for the purpose.
The new apartment building will be located at 1235 Nellis Street. The actual construction process will take place in the months and years ahead.
