The children of Woodstock and London recently had the chance to learn all about the world of science when a unique summer camp came to the area.
There were two week-long sessions, each featuring daily activities where the participants got to talk, via video teleconferencing, with an expert in the particular topic that was covered that day.
Whatever the subject, the main goal was to make sure that learning was fun as possible for the children and that everyone involved had a good time. Wearing camp T-Shirts which had been specially produced by a printing company, the campers got to work with electronics, learn about biology and crime scene investigation, work with a 3D printer and even play and learn inside an inflatable planetarium.
The subject experts who got involved with the camp included an instructor from the Ontario Police College, a professor from Fanshawe College, and an astrologist. The video teleconferencing system allowed them to share their knowledge without having to be there in person.
The camp was a pilot project which came about after as a partnership was formed between Virtual Researchers on Call (VROC) and Science, Engineering, Technology and Math (STEM). Input for the schedule of activities was sought from staff at the University of Guelph, Carlton University, the University of Waterloo, and MacEwan University in Edmonton.
It is hoped that this helped to instill and build on an interest in the sciences for those who participated. There were spots for 20 campers in each of the two sessions.
