The project will see eight residential units built on a parcel of city-owned land. The modular units will be between 320 and 400 square feet in size. The construction is expected to cost $1.12 million, drawing on funds from the Social Service Relief Fund.
The micro-housing project was selected as one that could be completed quickly and on land already owned by the city. Tillsonburg Mayor Stephen Molnar said the move was a part of a larger goal to make housing more affordable in Oxford County:
“We need to continue to work right across the county of Oxford to ensure that there’s equitable opportunity for people in all the communities across Oxford, working with the private sector.”
Micro-housing has recently become popular to obtain the independence of a free-standing house at an affordable cost. Oxford County maintains a supply of affordable housing, the rent of which is adjusted as a proportion of tenants’ income. Programs like these typically use methods like brochure printing and websites to inform local people of what is on offer.
The new micro-housing units will be located on Parkinson Road and are planned to have occupants moved in by the end of the year.
