Woodstock contest to determine public art

The Woodstock Art Cycle contest has entered its final round, with winning designs to be seen around town next year.

The contest invited Woodstock community members to submit designs for the city’s public bike racks, which are set to be installed in 2023. Five designs will be selected from the seven finalists, with the new racks installed at 10 locations throughout Woodstock. The final decision will be up to a public vote through the city’s website, with the finalists decided by a committee of community members. The contest is part of the municipal government’s Public Art project, which aims to get community input into how art and graphic design is used in Woodstock, which has also included submissions for the Bruce Flowers Sculpture Garden.

The seven finalists all took different approaches to the challenge. Some images depict Woodstock icons, such as the friendly Dairy Cow and the angular Woodstock Museum outline. Others take a more general approach, depicting a variety of cultural elements or animal drawings paying tribute to nature. One features a tree of bicycles, directly inspired by a love of cycling. The designers are anonymous, but each has provided quotations explaining their inspirations on the City’s website.

The Woodstock Art Cycle finalist voting will be open until December 4 on the City of Woodstock’s websites, with the winning designs to be implemented in 2023.
