Students from as far away as London and even Brampton were recently given an opportunity to come to Woodstock and learn more about post-high school career options that may be an ideal choice for them.
The Carrier Center, located at Athlone Place, welcomed 60 students who wanted to come out and learn more about the career possibilities that exist in the diesel mechanic trade. According to the centre’s manager, there is a shortage of trained technicians. There are many of these positions that need to be filled, and they offer steady work with pay rates that can be as high as $40 an hour.
Those who took part also learned more about the International Technical Education Program (ITEP), which is offered at the Conestoga College as a cooperative effort of Navistar and International Dealers. They were told about how the tuition for the program makes it an affordable choice, and once they are finished, they can receive apprentice training and eventually become full-fledged technicians.
An information session like this can be helpful to young people who are trying to figure out what they will do when they have finished their high school career. Brochure printers can create informational materials for the students to take home with them, outlining all the benefits of choosing the trade of a diesel mechanic.
