The play takes the form of various scenes from the dining room of a “well-to-do” household, depicting how both family and society change over a period of time. The Theatre Woodstock production will be directed by Lenore Butcher and feature local actors cast through an audition process. The actors will switch characters throughout the play, including playing multiple age groups.
The play’s marketing focuses on how Gurney’s writing combines drama and comedy:
“Dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce, ultimately, into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humour, and abundant humanity.”
The Dining Room is one of Gurney’s well-known plays from the 1980s dealing with upper-class foibles. The play is produced by Theatre Woodstock, a local amateur company that has been in existence for over 70 years. It will be the second part of the company’s 2022-23 season, following a successful production of Calendar Girls in October. Local theatre groups like this typically are volunteer community efforts, including contributions such as costumes from vintage stores and program printing from local Print shops.
Theatre Woodstock’s production of The Dining Room will be performed six times between December 2 and 10, with one afternoon matinee, at the Theatre Woodstock playhouse.
