Oxford County Public Health looks to flyers to get safety message across

In Woodstock, ON, health resources are becoming increasingly community accessible. In an effort to preventing common household accidents like slips and falls, health officials at the Oxford County Public Health and Emergency Services are turning to local libraries to give out Flyers and Posters to highlight household safety, hoping to curb the number of accidents that seniors sustain. Public health officials report to the Woodstock Sentinel Review that up to one in three seniors experiences a fall every year, some of which result in serious injuries and even fatalities. 56% of accidental deaths in people between ages 65 to 87 are attributed to slips and falls.

The resources are also aimed at educating grandchildren and younger readers about accident awareness and prevention.

'Safety Superheroes' is a story book published by printing companies to educate younger readers about treating injuries related to falls. Exercise at the Kitchen Sink is a manual and DVD of simple standing exercises seniors can perform to strengthen their joints and bones and improve endurance and flexibility. Watch Your Step bookmarks are printed healthy tips and reminders of helpful advice aimed at reducing accidents and promoting general overall health.
