More and more people are discovering the benefits of purchasing locally grown produce, and a new smartphone app will help Woodstock residents to do just that.
Researchers at University of Western Ontario have developed Smart APPetite software that will let consumers in Southern Ontario know what produce is in season, where to get it, and provide recipes that use it.
The system will also involve a website, where users can fill out a questionnaire to help determine their location, food likes and dislikes, any restrictions they may have, and exactly what sort of information they are looking for. The more information they provide, the better the app will work for them.
For example, a person in Woodstock who Signs up for the program will receive an alert that fresh apples are now in season. A GPS will give them directions to the nearest place where they can buy them, nearby food vendors that use them in their dishes, and recipes that use fresh apples.
Volunteers have been combing the area to gather information about local food producers, vendors and markets.
It is hoped that if the app catches on, it could be expanded throughout the province. This could help to support local food producers and increase the number of jobs in the agriculture, retail and food service industries.
Part of the success of the programme will be letting the public know about it. Poster printing companies can produce promotional materials that help to get the word out.Get a Free Quote for Signs
