Monument unveiled in Woodstock

A new memorial has been erected in Woodstock in memoriam of those in the Canadian Forces who lost their lives during the Afghan conflict.

It is located alongside the town’s cenotaph. The unveiling of the Afghanistan War Memorial was attended by hundreds of residents, and 158 Canadian flags were carefully planted in rows to honor the fallen.

The ‘battle cross’ salute – which shows a serviceperson’s boots, rifle and helmet – was officially shown to the public for the first time. There were several Silver Cross mothers in attendance at the ceremony, and each of them was given a red rose.

Stationery printers can create special programs for events like this, to help increase attendance figures.

The project to have this monument created was undertaken by the Evening of Honour, which is a group that brings together former and current military members who are veterans of the war – the longest the country has ever been involved in. They collected funds to pay for statue, and according to representative form the group, they had a lot of success.

The Evening of Honour group’s co-founder and member Jerry MacKnott remarked that he is proud to have been able to help build the memorial. He said he was very pleased that so many community members came out to attend the unveiling ceremony and pay their respects to the fallen and their families.
