Legion looks for ways to capture young peoples interest

The Royal Canadian legion in Woodstock recently celebrated Legion Week with open houses intended to give members of the public, especially young people, and idea of what the legion is all about and perhaps generate an increase in interest.

According to members, the decrease in interest among young people in the Legion is troubling, as they feel it is important that they learn about the war years and the contributions veterans made during that time. It is felt that schools should take more of an active role in helping to teach the younger generation about this subject.

Another possible solution to the problem will be to make the lives of the vets more personal to them. This can be done through such initiatives as having the get to know the retired soldiers better and also learn about their different regiments and what they did during the different wars and conflicts.

They are also planning to host a presentation by students at Hudson Park Secondary School, who recently made a trip to Juno Beach.

The concern is that if more young people don’t become interested and involved, some of the Legion branches will be forced to close, especially the smaller ones.

Print companies can help to increase awareness of the Legion and their activities by producing promotional materials that let people know about them and the work they do both for veterans and in their surrounding communities.
