Deadline announced for Canada Periodical Fund Aid to Publishers

Publishers, Print services, periodical and catalogue printing houses have until Nov. 24, 2010 to apply for funding through the Canada Periodical Aid to Publishers Fund. This component of the Aid to Publishers program is considered the cornerstone of the historically important Canada Periodical Fund. Its purpose is to give Canadian publishers and Print companies financial assistance to help them put out high-quality material for Canadian readers.

The 2011-2012 Applicant’s Guide is available online with information regarding Aid to Publishers, the largest portion of the three types of funding available. Aid to Publishers was launched in 2009, replacing assistance from the Canada Magazine Fund. The other two types of funding include the business innovation fund for small to mid-sized printing magazines and periodical printers that publish online. The other third is for Collective Initiatives, a project which helps increase the sustainability of Canadian Magazines and the weekly and monthly newspaper communities.

There is a $1.5 million funding cap for publishers, with the exception of agricultural publications such as The Western Producer, which received a subsidy of $1.8 million in 2008-2009. This is because rural farming publications contribute to Canadian society in a unique and special way. The Western Producer has a weekly paid circulation of 61,000.

This year, $52.7 million was distributed to 484 publications through the grant program. Print services in the Woodstock, ON area, along with catalogue printing and other periodical publishers are encouraged to download the application at www.pch.gc.ca and follow the links to the Aid to Publishers 2011-2012 funding opportunity, part of the Canada Periodical Fund. Deadline is Nov. 24, 2010.
