The 19th annual Wienerfest took place last month in Woodstock, Ontario. Those looking for sausages were out of luck, however, as the event was dedicated to the dachshund dog breed, colloquially known as the wiener dog.
Thousands of dogs and their owners attended. Not all of the canine companions were dachshunds, with some being designated “wiener wannabes”. The event raised money for Tiny Paws Dog Rescue, a London-based sanctuary for dogs under weighing under 20lbs.
The event included races and competitions for well-trained dogs. The big winner was Chester, a one-and-a-half-year-old who won three different races, taking home a year’s supply of dog food and some gift baskets. Other activities included bobbing for hot dogs and a costume contest.
Pet events like this can be a way to bring passionate owners and their pets together, and can be especially rewarding for social animals like dachshunds. The 2019 edition of Wienerfest took place on June 22 at the Pittock Conservation Area. It was a new venue this year, to allow for more spectators, and it was needed. An estimated 4,000 to 5,000 dogs were at the festival, including dachshund “celebrities” like Instagram star Meatball. Wienerfest was founded by Linda Collier, who personally owns eight dachshunds with special needs.
