The event is a friendly walk that goes across a three to five-kilometre route through North Waterloo’s rural trails. Attendees are encouraged to walk alongside children, pets or friends at their own pace. Organizers will be running a shuttle to and from parking at the St. Jacobs Farmer’s Market to help people get to and from the event from urban Waterloo.
Proceeds will go towards Starling Community Services, which provides support services to children and teens dealing with depression and other mental health issues. The organization runs programs like the Children’s Mental Health Centre and Safe Haven Youth Services in the Tri-Cities area. Donors can register as a team and compete on the leaderboard to see who can raise the most money.
Steps for Kids is hosted with support of volunteers, sponsors and community organizations. Charitable and community events often use methods like banner printing and signage to help recognize community contributions. Promotional material appeals to the public:
“Each step you take tells youth experiencing mental health challenges that you care about them. You’re taking a stand for their mental well-being.”
The 2026 edition of Starling Steps for Kids will take place on the morning of May 3 on Benjamin Road in Waterloo.
