Waterloo festival to light up the fall

The Lumen festival will be returning to Waterloo this September, aiming to showcase light in artistic and creative ways.

The all-ages festival is a product of the municipally funded Create Waterloo organizations. Over 30 visual, media, and performance artists will be invited to create installations based on the theme of light. Residents are invited to visit the displays for free after dark and see what the artists came up with.

The event is also designed to highlight Waterloo’s tech industry. Past editions have partnered with Waterloo institutions like the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, the Perimeter Institute, Pat the Dog Theatre Creation, and the Institute for Quantum Computing. The festival will also include an assortment of food trucks representing the best of local dining.

Lumen is run with the support of local volunteers and sponsors. Supporting businesses are often represented at festivals like this through banner printing and signage. Promotional material for Lumen emphasizes its community nature and the artistic themes on display, highlighting:
“...the interplay of light, art, and technology in installations located throughout uptown Waterloo. [...] Residents and community members are invited to enjoy this free festival in uptown Waterloo and get thinking about our community’s public spaces and how they transform our shared experiences.”

The 2025 edition of Lumen will take place along King Street South in uptown Waterloo on the evening of September 20.
