Development gets people talking in Stoney Creek
Recent plans have been announced to turn the former Stoney Creek dairy site into a senior’s residence, with city planners advising that the proposal meets the planning guidelines.
The historic Stoney Creek dairy, which began operations in 1929 and was one of the major employers in the community, was sold in 2010 and then quickly ceased operations. Since that time, development plans have been discussed, with the latest one being a 200-unit development geared towards seniors on the 1.03-hectare site.
The original proposal was for a six-story residential building for seniors but some concerns were raised by residents that the project would be out of scale within the neighborhood. After a number of public meetings, the landowner made some concessions. The development now consists of two five-story buildings that are linked together and contain 120 suites and 80 assisted living apartments.
Another point raised by residents during the public meetings was that the development is likely to increase traffic in the area and worsen the existing traffic problems, although traffic studies by the developer, supported by the town, say otherwise.
Plans of the proposed development in poster printing format - a tool to help people visualize the height, massing and character of the proposed development - were presented at the meeting by the developer. The posters will have helped people to visualize the impact of the proposed development.
The development will be settled soon when politicians vote on it. Poster printing will probably be presented at the council meeting to help politicians make an informed decision.
