St. Catharines to resume community garden programs
The City of St. Catharines will be opening submissions again for its annual community garden program, aiming to provide support for locally growing fruit, vegetables and other plants.
The city’s program provides matching funds for not-for-profit groups and neighbourhood associations, which can be used to purchase lumber, seeds, soil, and other materials used for local horticulture. Applicants must provide a proposed budget and work plan, with a time line concluding by October 31. The program has been used to fund projects such as the Partners in Planning Community Garden, Buchanan House Teaching Gardens, and Haig Neighbours Community Garden. The program’s stated goal is:
The approved gardens are then open for citizens from all walks of life to grow their own produce, flowers and more. The goal is to make gardening accessible for people who may not have their own outdoor space or who would like to be part of a broader community.
