Japanese drum group to perform in St Catharines
A world-travelled group performing traditional Japanese drumming will arrive in St. Catharines this January for a special performance.
The group, YAMATO, is based out of Nara, Japan and has performed across 54 different companies since forming 30 years ago. The group, consisting of dozens of members, performs on stage with more than 40 drums of different sizes and sounds, all the way up to the 500-kilogram “Odaiko” made from a 400-year-old tree. Promotional material emphasizes the performance’s “physicality” and the physical training of the drummers:
The one-day performance in St. Catharines will be titled “YAMATO: The Drummers of Japan”, with a ticket discount for members of the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre. Travelling shows like this often use methods like flyer printing and radio advertising to help attract music fans looking for something new. The appearance is part of a three-month tour of North America with the theme “Hito no Chikara”, or “The Power of Human Strength.” St. Catharines will be the first stop on the tour, with a special student matinee performance taking place before the evening show.
The St. Catharines performance of “YAMATO: The Drummers of Japan” will take place on the evening of January 16, 2025 at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre.

“They do not simply make their Taiko drums explode with sound; they produce delicate music that provides the listener with a palette of meticulously crafted sound. This is why YAMATO’s original performances are known as “physical music,” and continue to receive high acclaim.”
