With more and more commuters opting for less expensive public transit, it’s no surprise that ridership in many majour GTA communities. Ridership on the MiWay is up 5.9% compared to 2010 and carried 32.8 million revenue rides with customers boarding and exiting MiWay busses an astounding 49 million times last year. Ridership levels seem to be on the upswing with Miway, with a 4.8% increase in 2008 and another 5.2% increase in 2010 for the Mississauga transit line. The 2011 ridership increase is a record high for the city.
The city has made a number of investments that have helped encourage local riders to use its transit system, including more frequent services, the use of fuel efficient and fully accessible busses and the integration of PRESTO card readers on all MiWay busses to connect with other GTA transit services.
Mississauga transit has gone high tech as well, with smart phone apps and mobile sites for easy access to bus routes and schedules. The city also has an ambassador program to encourage secondary school students to take public transit to school.
