Statistics Show Printing Shipments Down for June

Statistics released by Ottawa for performance in the Canadian Print industry shows that both imports and exports dropped for the month of June 2011. Statistics Canada’s import and export statistics cover all facets of the industry across the country and monitors the balance of trade between Canadian Print exports and imports with those of the U.S.

Not surprisingly, given the current trend of the high Canadian dollar versus the lower U.S dollar, Canadian Print companies have seen lower Print exports than they would like for the month of July. This year’s June exports totaled $72.8 million, compared to $81.6 million of June 2010. Print companies closest to the border, in urban centres like Toronto, Mississauga, Ottawa and Kingston face particular competition with U.S printers, who may offer comparatively cheaper printing services due to their lower dollar.

Surprisingly, printing imports have dropped as well for the month of June, however the difference was less dramatic than export shifts when comparing this year to last year. The total number of printing imports totaled $99.5 million for the month of June, down from June 2010 numbers of $103.8 million, causing a slip in the balance of trade between the two countries.

June’s domestic printing shipments also dropped significantly, providing evidence that printing companies are not exporting their products and services as much as last year. In June 2011 printers shipped out $636.1 million, while at the same time last year, printers shipped out $701.8 million, more than 9% more.
