The ninth annual Community Cup will look to highlight the diversity of London, Ontario while bringing communities together through sport and games next month.
The main activity of the day will be a youth soccer tournament with teams representing more than 10 different communities in London.
A team representing the London Police Services will also play a squad put together by the Cross Cultural Learner Centre (CCLC), featuring recent arrivals to Canada. Both boys’ and girls’ teams will be represented. The event will also include cultural activities such as arts, crafts, and entertainment from around the world. Colourful face painting has been a kids’ favourite at past events. Community events like this have the power to bring together people from diverse backgrounds, often relying on the dedicated work of volunteers, as well as support from local businesses like restaurants for food and Print shops for banner printing.
The 2019 edition of the Community Cup will take place at Jesse Davidson park on August 10. Organizers say they expect 500-600 attendees. The one-day tournament and festival will be free for all visitors, having been described in the past by organizers as a “friend-raiser.”
The CCLC has been active in Southern Ontario for the past 50 years, and currently offers programs for newcomers ranging from language classes to social groups, as well as diverse cultural programming for all.
