A seasonal recital near London North will reinterpret the traditional Christmas ballet through a distinctly Canadian lens accompanied by Tchaikovsky’s music.
The Nutcracker, presented by Centennial Hall and choreographed by Bengt Jörgen, follows Lady Birch and Klara as they encounter winter and Canada’s wildlife for the first time. Set against a snow-covered landscape, working lumberjacks and galloping Mounties, the performance blends the familiar childhood story themes with Canadian iconography.
Dancers will perform in brightly coloured costumes on theatrical sets designed by Canadian artists Carmichael (1931), Thompson (1916) and Fitzgerald (1922), bringing the Nutcracker and the King of Mice to life to Tchaikovsky’s composition. London’s staging of the production has become a seasonal tradition for local audiences.
Created in partnership with McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the production centres on a young girl, Klara, newly arrived in Canada, who discovers winter and the animals living in the forest, but longs for summer. Set in Edwardian-era Algonquin, the performance introduces audiences to beavers, squirrels, skunks, and other northern animals through dance and narrative.
