This February, London will mark Black History Month with a month-long series of public events under the title Reflections of Black London 1820s-2020s.
The events aim to highlight the unique experience and contributions of African, Caribbean, and Black communities throughout two centuries of London History. The opening ceremony will be hosted at the London Museum, featuring keynote speaker Moyo Omole and live performers, including Norika Niyungeko and Helen Hibbert. The London Public Library will host a Family Program, which also features live performances with the goal of public education. Events will come to North London with an open house designed to feature Black leaders in the London business sector.
Other events throughout the month include a documentary screening, a live performance by Senegalese-born musician Abel Maxwell and an African Food Festival highlighting the continent’s cuisine. The closing ceremony, hosted at Wolf Performance Hall, will feature a mixture of song, dance, and spoken word performances, followed by a reception with food and drinks. Cultural events such as these help to highlight the diversity in areas such as North London, and often do this through colourful banner printing and other visual marketing, with Black History Month commemorated across North America every February.
Reflections of Black London 1820s-2020s will take place between February 4 and 25 at various locations around London.
