Grand finale for local entrepreneurship program

Western University’s four month long Propel Sales Incubator program (PSI) concluded last week with its annual Demo Day. The 11 teams that participated in this year’s summer curriculum had the opportunity to showcase their inventions to local business investors and mentors.

One of the entrepreneurs featured on Thursday August 17th, was Johnson Nguyen, the creator of Mood & Co. His soy-wax candles have already attracted some attention, after they were included in the goody Bags distributed at the 2017 Teen Choice Awards.

Adopted by Western University in 2015, the increasingly popular PSI program provides each successful team with $7,500 in start-up funding, access to mentors familiar with their type of product, learning opportunities with workshops held over the span of the program, as well as desk space at the university.

This year, the program had more than 90 applications, with 17 entrepreneurs making up the 11 teams from throughout South-western Ontario selected to participate. Preference was given to new products that, with the successful use of marketing services, had already produced revenue. In addition, strong supplier relationships and a dedicated group of consumers were required.

The program has gained notoriety with Pascal Press, a travelling coffee press that was featured on Dragons’ Den. Last years’ graduating teams are credited with serving more than 1,200 customers with sales exceeding $750,000.

London’s Propel Entrepreneurship Centre is located at 1400 Western Road. A complete list of the 2017 successors as well as more information about the program can be found at propel.uwo.ca.
