Workshop to help make the most of Cambridges wild harvest

The fields and forest around Cambridge are filled with wild plants that can be both delicious and nutritious. They will be the focus of a workshop that has been planned for this spring, which will help those who participate discover the banquet that can be found right in their own backyards.

The class is open to all ages, from children to adults. It will give attendees a basic grounding in plants and the language that surrounds collecting them from the wild, and they will be encouraged to keep on learning even after the workshop is over.

Luke Eckstein, who is a biologist with lots of experience in the art of foraging, will facilitate the session, and students will discover which wild plants are currently in season so they can start harvesting them right away. They will learn how to identify edible plants and also ones that are either inedible or poisonous, and if any mushrooms are in season, they will be included as well.

One of the aspects of wild harvesting that will be emphasized is how to do so sustainably. Finally, there will be tips for including wild plants in a menu. Field guides can be useful to those who plan to forage for their dinner, and these can be prepared for a course like this by local Print shops.

This three hour long session will take place in Guelph on May 18th. Its location will be released at a later time.
