The Cambridge Symphony Orchestra and the Grand River Chorus have teamed up to help celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee year this week.
The partnership will be hosting a replication of Last Night at the Proms, which is one of Britain’s most hallowed of musical traditions. The original was started in 1895 by Henry Wood and has been repeated each spring for the past 118 years.
Until it was destroyed in an air raid in 1941, the event was held in Queen's Hall inside Lanham Place in London. After that, it was moved to Royal Albert Hall where it has been staged ever since.
In honor of the Queen’s 60 years of service, the plans for the evening include a grand celebration of the British Empire. It will be a fun filled evening which features live classical music in an informal and youth friendly setting. Print companies have produced decorations and programs for the evening’s performance.
This musical celebration will start at 8:00pm on Friday at Forward Church, which is located at 455 Mayer’s Road in Cambridge. Admission will be on a pay-as-you-can basis.
The symphony and chorus will come together again on June 2, when they will host ‘A Coronation for our Generation’, which will feature music from the Queen’s coronation.
