A recent council decision means that, starting in 2017, Cambridge residents will have their garbage collected once every two weeks.
It is expected that this change to the schedule, which is set to begin on March 6th in two years’ time, will result in savings of as much as $1.5m annually. There will initially be a four-bag limit, which will be reduced to three a couple of years later. This will apply to all residents of the Waterloo Region.
Anyone with more than the allotted limit will be able to purchase tags, which will allow for extra Bags to be collected from curbs. There will still be a weekly pickup of green and blue bins, and there will be no limit on how many items they can contain. There will also be a bi-weekly pickup of yard waste from April to November, while three bulky items may be left out for pickup every two weeks.
During 2016, the council will look into finding the best ways of letting the public know about the changes. A printing company could produce Brochures, Flyers, and other printed items that can be distributed to all the households in the area, letting them know about the new rules.
