University students studying architecture in Cambridge are working hard to build a bridge between themselves and their community, and their efforts have begun to pay off.
The current location for their BRIDGE project is in the former Shoppers Drug Mart building on Main Street. It captures the students’ energy and enthusiasm, and gives them a space to showcase their individual efforts outside of the usual course curriculum.
The project began two years ago and includes a website. So far, the site has garnered 2,600 hits.
They have started to host events at their site; the first was titled “Engi-techture” and it featured the photography and artwork of 18 students and members of the university’s faculty. Over 100 members of the public came out to see the work on show.
The group is planning on hosting many other public events in the future, and the space can also be used for workshops, lectures, meetings, and other functions. An example will be the annual Rome night, when students returning from a semester spent in Rome will be able to share their work and what they learned.
The current space being used by the group is only temporary; it will be occupied until they are ready to move into their more permanent location in September.
Using appropriate signage and other promotional materials can really help to let the community know about a group and what sorts of activities it undertakes. In this instance, a company that provides printing services could work with the students to create exactly what they need.
