Conservation lands offer a haven for native plants and animals, but they need to be maintained, and a hands-on activity will provide some care for one of these sites in Cambridge.
Rare undertakes a variety of ecological initiatives, and volunteers are being sought for its Cambridge restoration project. The registrants will meet up at Lamb’s Inn, and they are reminded to come dressed for the task at hand, including long pants, sturdy footwear, gloves and a hat to shade them from the sun.
The participants will be taking on species that have become invasive, taking over space from native species. They will remove shrubs such as honeysuckle, autumn olive, barberry buckthorn and white mulberry, and they will learn how to identify these plants in the field. The work may be labour intensive, but the planners have explained that the task is very important, and tools will be provided.
Print shops can supply T-Shirts for the project leaders of an activity like this to wear, which will make it easier for volunteers to spot them if they have a question to ask or need other assistance.
Rare’s Invasive Shrub Removal Day will be broken up into two sessions, and those who are interested can choose to register for either one or both timeslots. The work will take place on September 23rd.
