What is a Print? At the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia
The exhibit; ‘What is a Print’, is currently showing at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax until January 22, 2012. The exhibit is curated by Laurie Hamilton and Mara Dianne O’Neill, with help from David Dahms, an artist and former printmaking teacher at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.
The definition of a print is, according to the exhibit, an “artist-designed image, executed on a matrix.” The history of print is basically the quest to find a faster and easier way to copy an image so that it can be viewed by and distributed to more people. There are three different kinds of prints; relief, intaglio and planographic; several examples of each of these techniques are on show at the art gallery during this exhibit. Magnification is also used to draw the audience’s attention to specific parts of prints so they can get a better understanding of the technique used.
Those who work in print companies local to Halifax should take the time out to visit this exhibit, because those involved in the creative industries can always learn from each other and find ways to improve their own art or design by viewing that of others. This exhibit presents prints from several decades which show how the techniques and the craft of printmaking have changed over the years. Also, local business owners can get ideas from the history of printmaking for their next direct mailing marketing campaign.
