Those in the printing industry use many materials that are classified as hazardous. While the industry is moving towards more environmentally friendly materials, there is still the problem of disposing of the current materials once they have been used. It is important that a business consensus be reached on the proper and safe ways in which to dispose of these materials. Stewardship is an ethic that seeks to find responsible ways in which to manage this.
The 2011 Conference on Stewardship will be held from September 20 to 21 at the Marriott Harbourfront Halifax. The event, which is held every two years in Canada, brings people from across the industry including Print companies in Halifax, stewardship programs and government together to discuss the challenges they all face. The conference also features a trade show; 20 exhibitors will be offering their services to the over 300 delegates who are expected to attend.
The conference will be opened by Nova Scotia Minister of Environment Sterling Belliveau. The keynote speaker for the event will be Jeffrey Simpson, a political commentator and columnist with the Globe and Mail. In addition, there will be several guest speakers including Bob Willard, Gemma Zecchini, Margse Vermette, Guy Crittenden, Jerry Powell, Michael Quartermain and Antonella Candido. All of the speakers who will be taking part in the conference come from a variety of areas; they are managers of stewardship programs, journalists and business people.
