Banner and poster printing firms in Halifax will be on alert after the publisher of a Giller prize-winning book turned around his initial decision to refuse outsourcing the Print job of the book. Nova Scotia’s Gaspereau Press had the winning book at the recent Scotiabank Giller awards; the winning book was called "The Sentimentalists," and it was penned by Johanna Skibsrud.
Immediately after the Giller prize victory, Gaspereau Press’ co-owner, Andrew Steeves, told media that he was unwilling to reach a deal with a bigger, out-of-province Print company in order to handle more demand for more Copies of "The Sentimentalists." The book originally went to Print in 2009 with a limited order of only 800 Copies. Steeves insinuated that he wanted to help out the local, Nova Scotia economy by keeping additional Print runs local.
However, since the aforementioned developments, much media attention has come to Gaspereau Press because of their prize-winning book—and even more unwanted attention apparently was directed at Steeves for his hostile stand. There was something of a minor outrage among some Canadians who criticised Steeves’ original stand.
As a result, he has now buckled under pressure and agreed to outsource the printing of more Copies of "The Sentimentalists" to a publisher capable of churning out more than 30,000 Copies of the book.
Poster printing firm operating in Halifax will no doubt look forward to assisting Skibsrud in the promotion of his award winning book and bringing it to the wider audience it deserves.
