New employment initiative for people with autism in Halifax

A new initiative by Autism Nova Scotia has been put into place by the organization, which it hopes will make it easier for job seekers in Halifax and

the surrounding communities who are on the spectrum to find work.

The project, undertaken in conjunction with the Ready, Willing and Able program, seeks to make it easier for those with autism to enter the workforce where they will be able to put their unique abilities to use for their employers.

The pilot initiative first started three months ago. Those who wish to be included can upload their resumes outlining their education, previous experiences, abilities and goals. Potential employers can browse through them, and select those they may be interested in hiring.

According to Cynthia Carroll, executive director for Autism Nova Scotia, so far 10 percent of those who added their information to the database have found work, while others have been able to use the system to find other appropriate support for their goals or are still in the search process. Flyers can be printed for distribution to area companies that outline the benefits of hiring someone with an autism spectrum disorder.

Carroll went on to say that many people with ASD’s have an intelligence level that is normal or above, and the main issue for them is a deficit in communication skills. She noted that employers who are willing to give them a chance will find it was a good business decision, as they are loyal, punctual and highly dedicated.
