New concrete curing technology developed in the Halifax region

A company based near Halifax in the Burnside industrial park has developed a formula for concrete that it hopes will help to make the production of this important building material a lot more “green”.

CarbonCure Technologies developed this new technique, which involves injecting it with carbon dioxide. This causes it to set faster and makes it stronger, resulting in it having a lower carbon footprint. The CO2 gas is drawn from emitters and becomes mineralized as the material cures. According to the company, this lowers emissions by up to 15 percent.

CarbonCure Technologies plans on opening an office in the US, which will employ both sales staff and technicians. The company reports that it will still keep its head office in Nova Scotia. A printer that can also perform binding services will be able to produce high quality bound Copies of marketing materials for distribution to customers at the new office as well as its existing one.

The product is already being used at a site in the north end part of the city near Pier 21 by Quality Concrete. It is the first company in Canada that is using this new method. It is already in use by 20 concrete block production businesses in North America, but this is the first ready mix to do so. Two US based contractors have signed agreements to use this technology.
