Jacques Hurtubise exhibit at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax is currently presenting an exhibit celebrating the work of Canadian artist Jacques Hurtubise. The exhibit will close on September 5, 2011. Companies who provide poster printing are always interested in such art shows; it gives them ideas on how they can incorporate art works into their products.

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax is open 7 days a week; 10-5, Monday-Wednesday, Friday-Sunday and 10-9 on Thursday. The Hurtubise exhibition features 90 paintings and prints by the Quebec-born artist. Hurtubise is a key figure in the Canadian abstract art world and his works are available in several art galleries throughout the country.

Jacques Hurtubise was born in Montreal in 1939. He attended the Ecole des Beaux-arts and his first public exhibit was in 1961. In 2000, Hurtubise was awarded the Paul-Emile Borduas Prize which is presented to artists who are considered to be craftsmen in the visual arts. He currently lives on Cape Breton Island.

The art of Jacques Hurtubise jumps out at you. It is colourful, abstract and dramatic. You can definitely tell that, like Andy Warhol, Hurtibuise was influenced by commercial art. Several of his art works look like they could easily have been used in marketing campaigns.

Commercial art and purely decorative art are consistently influencing one another; sometimes it’s hard to see where one type of art ends and another one begins. Firms who specialize in poster printing are definitely influenced by what they see in the current art world.
