Residents of Nova Scotia are often called ‘bluenosers’, and an event that will give them a chance to earn that title will be hitting the waters of the North Atlantic on New Year’s Day.
The Herring Cover Polar Bear Dip has offered brave souls from Halifax a unique chance to start the new year. The event can be a lot of fun for both bathers and spectators alike. It’s free to register, and everyone who does is encouraged to collect pledges, and these will be passed along to Feed Nova Scotia and other local charities.
The dip itself will be held in Herring Cove’s Government Wharf, and before they take to the water, the ‘polar bears’ are asked to stop by St. Paul’s Perish Hall to register. Waivers will need to be signed, and everyone will be issued a number. Once everyone is ready, a bagpiper will lead the way and the crowd will give a salute to Canada before participants jump into the water. Hot beverages will be waiting for those who take the plunge.
