Residents of Halifax, Dartmouth and the surrounding communities who commute across the harbour each day are finding that their trip can be a bit longer due to the construction currently taking place on the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge.
The structure is currently undergoing an upgrade, which has been termed “The Big Lift”. The process involves replacing the bridge deck in sections. There are 46 of them, and as each old one is removed, a new one is brought in and lifted into its place.
The goal has been to do as much of the work as possible during the times when the use of the bridge is not as heavy, such as at night and on weekends.
While the project is being undertaken, there have been a few delays that have occurred if it took longer to insert the new section of deck. There are also “bumps”, which is the term the public has given to the joins between the pieces. These can sometimes be fairly deep until they are filled with pavement, and speedbumps have also been installed to make sure the drivers slow down. Temporary Signs produced by a printing company can be installed to make drivers aware of these potential hazards.
The entire project is expected to take more than 10 months to complete, but once it is finished, it is hoped that it will extend the lifespan of the bridge for at least another 70 years.
