Art Gallery of Nova Scotia receives photographic gifts

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia was recently given a collection of photographs by world-famous photographer Annie Leibovitz. It was a gift from the Mintz family in honor of Al and Faye Mintz.

The collection, which will be called ‘Annie Leibovitz: Photographs from her Books’, features works that have appeared in the artist’s Books since 1983. Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter welcomed the gift by saying:

"Having a home for this work at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is something Nova Scotians will cherish for years to come."

Leibovitz has been a force in the world of celebrity photography ever since she began working with Rolling Stone Magazine in 1970. Her works appear in collections all over the world. She has taken photographs of people such as John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Demi Moore. She has also won several prestigious awards, including the International Center of Photography’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art Award to Distinguished Women in the Arts.

The gift will help the Art Gallery further build on its photography collection, which it has been developing for the past 10 years.

On a related note, those who visit the gallery will also have the chance to see ‘Edward Burtynsky: Photographs’, a travelling exhibit which features 52 prints by the artist, all with the theme of global industrial landscapes. The images are just some of the 15,000 works in the Gallery, many of which have been replicated as souvenir Postcards by Halifax printing companies.
