New student housing to open in Dartmouth

Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) has announced the opening of two new student housing projects, including one in Dartmouth.

The two new housing units were officially unveiled in late July with visits from Nova Scotia provincial officials. The Akerley campus in Dartmouth will be home to 100 students, while 50 beds will be added to the Pictou campus in Stellarton. Each of the new rooms will be occupied by students in September as part of the upcoming academic term.

The two buildings are part of an ongoing initiative to add more student housing for NSCC, along with an additional 470 beds that will be opened across five other campuses over the coming years. Jayesh Thali, vice-president of the Akerley Campus Student Association, expressed happiness at the opening:

“I know just how important this new housing resource will be for students needing an affordable place to stay while studying at the campus.”

The Akerley campus building is 4,459 square metres and cost $24.1 million to construct. The initiative is also intended to help free up general housing stock in Dartmouth and other Nova Scotia municipalities. Universities and municipalities often use methods such as brochure printing and web resources to inform students of programs such as these.

The two new NSCC student housing buildings will open to students in September for the fall 2024 term.
