The Maritime Fiddle Festival will be holding its 75th anniversary edition this July in Dartmouth, bringing together top traditional musicians from across Atlantic Canada and beyond.
One of the primary focuses of the festival is a fiddle competition for players at all levels. There will be seven different categories for fiddlers to compete in, as well as two step dance competitions. On Friday night there will be a public dance and jam, with musicians invited to collaborate on-stage. The final day of the festival will feature stage performances from acclaimed artists and groups such as Kelli Trottier, Ivan & Vivian Hicks, and the Ekkio Youth Ensemble of Strings. There will also be awards presented for stand-out performers from throughout the festival, including the Oldest Fiddler, Best Jig, and Come On Back Awards.
The competition was founded in 1950 as the Old-Time Fiddling and Step Festival, and has since expanded into an annual multi-day event. Classes are divided by age as well as open and group categories. Cash prizes are available for the top 3 places in each category as well as a participation award for everyone who takes the stage. Festivals such as this often use methods like poster printing and local media advertising to reach a wide range of audience members.
The 2024 Maritime Fiddle Festival will hold its public performances on July 5 and 6 at the NSCC Ivany Campus in Dartmouth.
