A Winnipeg activity series that encourages people to put down their devices and head outdoors has dates set for spring of 2026, with a flower-themed edition coming soon in May.
The gardens of Dalnavert Museum and Visitors' Centre will provide a glimpse of Victorian life, and its Screen-Free Sundays program will be running on dates from April until August. Each instalment will have its own theme, and the learning will be fun and hands-on.
Aimed at kids aged 6-12 and their families, the May ‘Flowers’ class will explore the secrets of floriography, which refers to how different species, varieties and cultivars of flowers were used in the Victorian era to convey different messages without saying a word. Everyone will get some practice by “decoding” different bouquets that will be on display throughout the venue, and they can then craft their own arrangement using an assortment of recycled materials that will be provided. Tickets for the session are $5.00 per person, and it will run for one hour.
An activity planned with kids in mind may call for an assortment of materials that make learning fun. These can include word searches and other activity sheets, and can be ordered from Stationery printers.
Dalnavert Museum and Visitors' Centre will be hosting its Screen-Free Sundays: Flowers session on May 3rd. Information about subsequent dates and themes can be found on the Friends of Dalnavert website.
