Vancouver has made a commitment to being a ‘greener’ city, and it recently released the positive results of its Green Bin program.
As part of the ‘Greener City, Zero Waste Initiative’, the city has brought in a program where residents will be required to recycle all organics and food scraps. It is currently being practised by 100,000 duplexes and single-family homes and also 1,800 multi-family residences.
These homes now have a biweekly garbage pickup, while the organics green bin is collected weekly.
The end result since the program started is that there are 64% more compostable organics being picked up and 40% less garbage. This translates into 24,500 tonnes less waste being incinerated or ending up in city landfills.
The city has also instituted a system of seven Food Scraps Drop Off Spots for those residents who are not serviced by city collection. So far, they have collected 1,120 tonnes.
The organics collected by the green bins and drop off spots is composted to provide high-quality soil amendments for Vancouver’s gardens.
This is all leading up to a citywide organic waste ban for Vancouver area’s regular garbage pickup.
