Vancouver urban gardens seeking public support

A Vancouver not-for-profit group is helping to not only bring a touch of green to the city’s downtown Eastside, but also provide the area’s restaurants and citizens with locally produced fruits and vegetables. If things go as planned, local growers will soon be offering more of the fruits of their labors to the public.

Sole Food Street Farms was founded in 2009. It takes urban vacant brown lots and transforms them into thriving organic vegetable gardens and orchards.

It also provides stable employment to 26 residents who are struggling with poverty and addiction issues.

The group has grown from a first harvest of 10,000 pounds of produce to four tons on its four sites covering 4.5 acres of land that would otherwise sit vacant and unused.

With so much good wholesome food to give, the group wants to find ways to get it to the public. One of its plans is to open two permanent produce stands that will sell the food on a “pay what you can” basis . One will be at one of the organisation’s Eastside gardens, and the other will be located at Granville Island market.

The non-profit has set a fundraising goal of $100,000, and has set up a crowdfunding campaign on indiegogo.com, which will be open until June 1st.

Flyer printing firms can help with this sort of a campaign by creating promotional materials, which informs the public of the project and the benefits of supporting it.
