Vancouver to honour Remembrance Day

Vancouver’s Remembrance Day ceremony and parade will take place at Victory Square Cenotaph in downtown Vancouver this year.

The Victory Square ceremony is one of the largest ceremonies in the province, with thousands attending. The ceremony will begin at 10 am. The duration of the ceremony is approximately an hour and a half. This year, the Vancouver Bach Youth Choir and Sarabande will be performing at the ceremony. The conductor of the choir will be Shane Raman. In previous ceremonies, the march of veterans, police officers, and the Canadian Armed Forces follows the musical performance. Next there will be performances by pipe bands followed by the singing of the Canadian national anthem.

At 11:00 am, the Last Post will be played on the bugle, which will be immediately followed by a two-minute moment of silence. Vancouver’s Remembrance Day ceremony is special, as there is a military flyover by the Royal Canadian Air Force, as well as a 21-gun salute by the 15th Field Artillery Regiment.

Once the ceremony has been complete, the Remembrance Day parade commences. With the sound of bagpipes and trumpets, attendees will view several different police forces, cadets, and various military personal marching. This is a sombre ceremony and therefore there will not be any floats or members of government greeting parade goers. Print shops can help spread the message for important community gatherings, such as this one, to the local and wider community.

Those wishing to attend the Remembrance Day Ceremony and Parade are encouraged to come early, take public transit, dress appropriately for the weather and wear a poppy. The Remembrance Day Ceremony and Parade take place on November 11.
